Kaddish and the Ethics of Honor

Kaddish and the Ethics of Honor

Ethical dilemmas surrounding the sacred tradition of reciting Kaddish:

  • Do undeserving relatives merit the gift of kaddish or other posthumous kindnesses?
  • Is it ethical to accept payment for saying kaddish or performing other moral duties?
  • How should conflicts over communal honors—such as aliyah or yahrzeit rights—be resolved?
